A boy is being treated for a serious head injury after he was assaulted with what is thought to have been a baseball bat as he sat on a bench in a park.
The 15-year-old was attacked in Easthill Park, Portslade, after he and another male were approached by two youths at about 20:00 BST on Friday.
A member of the public intervened, preventing a further assault, and the offenders fled, Sussex Police said.
The victim is currently in a stable condition in hospital.
Both suspects were described as white, aged between 15 and 16. Police later arrested two people who are being questioned about the incident.
