Plans for a £700,000 cycle circuit for Middlesbrough have moved a step closer.

The 1km (0.6 mile) enclosed circuit will be based at the town's Prissick Park off Marton Road and is due to open to the public later this year.

A 17 metre long (55ft) prefabricated clubhouse is already in place after arriving from a factory in Bridlington on six lorries.

The project has been funded by British Cycling, the Middlesbrough Healthy Town programme and NHS Middlesbrough.

Brenda Thompson, Middlesbrough Council's executive member for public health and sport, said: "To see the clubhouse arrive on site is very exciting.

"The clubhouse will provide those essential facilities such as toilets and meeting areas that will make using the circuit enjoyable and accessible.

"When it opens Middlesbrough Cycling Circuit will be a wonderful facility for cyclists of all abilities."

British Cycling is funding the project as part of their plans to develop cycling facilities across the UK in a bid to increase the number of cyclists.

Middlesbrough was awarded Healthy Town status by the government in December 2008 and secured £9m of funding to help reduce obesity and increase physically activity and healthy lifestyles in Middlesbrough.
