Health officials investigating an outbreak of E. coli infection in County Durham and Teesside have reported three more suspected cases.

It brings the total number affected to 15, with six of them in hospital.

No definite source has been identified, but many had eaten cooked meat or items from Robinson's butchers, which has shops in Wingate and Billingham.

Public Health England said the company was co-operating fully with the investigation.

Dr Deb Wilson, chairwoman of the outbreak control team, said: "[Robinson's] conducted a deep clean of both premises and discarded all ready to eat food prepared before 16 July.

"As a precautionary measure we have advised anyone who bought cooked meats or savouries from Robinson's butchers in Wingate or Billingham between 25 June and 15 July, not to eat them.

"If they still have any of these products in their fridge or freezer they should throw them out immediately."

E. coli O157 is a serious bacterial infection that can cause severe stomach pain, bloody diarrhoea and kidney failure.
