Detectives investigating an attack on an elderly man who had his life savings stolen after being hit over the head with a shovel have charged two men.

The 77-year-old had gone out to get coal on Saturday when he was targeted.

The victim, who lives alone in the Coronation area of Bishop Auckland, was dragged into his house and pinned down.

Christopher Barnett, 26, of Trimdon, and Jason Hackett, 23, from Stockton, have been charged with aggravated burglary.

They are due to appear at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court.

The man has been released from hospital following treatment for his injuries.

Police said a further arrest is likely.
