An officer's finger was broken in three places as police tried to arrest a man following racist abuse on a bus.
Police had been called after a male passenger made comments to a woman on the bus in Devizes Road, Salisbury, on Friday evening.
The man had refused to get off the bus when asked and abused another woman, Wiltshire Police said.
Officers were called and arrested the man. He struggled and an officer had her ring finger broken.
She required an operation, the force spokesman said.
The incident happened on a Wilts and Dorset bus.
The police spokesman said a 38-year-old man was arrested and later released on police bail, pending inquiries.
He appealed for the women who were verbally abused and for witnesses to contact the force.
