Wiltshire Police investigate Swindon care home neglect allegations

A criminal investigation has begun into allegations of the neglect of an elderly woman who was a resident at a private care home in Swindon.

Sheila Edney, 91, who lived at the Princess Lodge Care Centre, was admitted to the Great Western Hospital on 5 July and died a week later.

Wiltshire Police said the investigation by its Vulnerable Adults Team began on 29 June, before she died.

The home said it would "co-operate fully with any investigation".

The Wiltshire Police spokeswoman said the investigation started after concerns about Mrs Edney's care were raised by external professionals who visited the home.

"The care home is fully co-operating with the investigation and there is no suggestion of physical assault or mental abuse at this time," she said.

The spokeswoman said a post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as natural causes and a heart condition. The death is not being treated as suspicious, she added.

Paul Ware, director of Life Style Care Plc, which runs the home, said Mrs Edney had been living there for a number of weeks before she was admitted to hospital.

"We've sent our condolences to the family of Sheila Edney, but at this time it would be inappropriate to comment any further," he said.
