Two adults and three children are being treated in hospital after a house fire in Swindon.

One was taken to the burns unit at Southmead Hospital in Bristol while the others were taken to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

Four fire engines were called to the property in Cricklade Road just before 03:00 BST.

Firefighters believe the blaze started in the kitchen and spread to the roof through an open loft hatch.

A Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said a man, woman and three children had escaped from the house prior to the brigade arriving.

"Most of the house has been severely damaged by the fire, in part because internal doors were either open or the layout was open plan," she said.

"The loft hatch was also open, which allowed the fire to also spread into the roof void.

"It's believed the man suffered serious burns, while the other four occupants were treated for minor burns and smoke inhalation.

The fire, which started in the kitchen, remains under investigation but is not believed to be suspicious at this time.

Diversions are in place between Cirencester Way and Headlands Grove. Motorists are being advised to avoid the area.
