A 32-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of a man who was assaulted at a loyalist 11th night bonfire in Cullybackey.

North Antrim Magistrates Court was told the victim - Andrew McDowell - is in a critical but stable condition.

Neil Greer of Ardnamaine in Cullybackey is also charged with having an offensive weapon - a golf club - and assaulting another man.

A 24-year-old co-accused faces charges over the stabbing of a woman.

Andrew Connor, of Markstown Grove in Cullybackey, is charged with wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm to Patricia Kernohan and assault thereby occasioning actual bodily harm on the second male victim - Billy Joe Kernohan.

Both accused deny the charges.

A police officer told the court that at about 0400 BST on 12 July police received a report of a disturbance at Tobar Park in the village and when they arrived they saw three casualties - two men and a woman.

He said one man was lying unconscious on the ground with a severe head wound and the second man was also injured while the woman had a small stab wound to her chest.

Fractured skull

The officer said Mr McDowell "was not out of the woods yet" and was suffering from a fractured skull and bleeding to the brain.

He said the two less seriously injured were treated at the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine and discharged.

A very badly burnt golf club was recovered from the bonfire which police suspect may have been the weapon used and various knives were found during follow-up searches at the homes of the accused and another address, the court was told.

The officer said the victims and the accused know each other and live close by in Cullybackey and he feared the accused may make contact with the injured parties or try to intimidate witnesses.

He confirmed to a defence lawyer thas both accused admitted being in the Cullybackey area at the time of the incident but denied involvement in the attack.

The defence lawyer said both defendants offer sympathy to the victims "but want to make it abundantly clear that they were not involved directly or indirectly."

He agreed to both accused being remanded in custody to 22 July to appear via video link at Ballymena Magistrates Court sitting in Antrim town so suitable bail addresses can be found outside Cullybackey.
