A man whose brother was killed through car crime helped steal a vehicle used to ram police, a court has heard.

David Wilson is alleged to have been chased by PSNI officers after taking a Subaru car from an address in Belfast.

The 24-year-old and another suspect are also accused of stealing petrol from a Lisburn Road garage before the pursuit began early on New Year's Eve.

Mr Wilson, of Cotlands Green, Dunmurry, faces charges of aggravated vehicle taking and making off without paying.

He is also accused of driving while disqualified.

Crown counsel Philip Henry said the Subaru was used to ram into a police car after it was spotted being driven dangerously near Mr Wilson's home.

It was brought to a halt by a collision, with Mr Wilson allegedly identified as being in the passenger seat.

He was later arrested as he attempted to leave the area in a taxi, the High Court heard.

With CCTV footage from the petrol station allegedly linking him to the stolen car, Mr Henry claimed Mr Wilson's alibi that he had been at a party was false.

However a defence barrister said the accused denied being a passenger in the Subaru.

He argued that the CCTV footage was poor quality, included no facial recognition, and was part of a weak prosecution case.

His lawyer added: "He has had a brother killed through car crime. That happened when he was 21.

"He very well recognises the problems it brings to one's door."

No further details on the circumstances surrounding the death were disclosed.

Bail was refused.
