Three men - one of them a teenager - have appeared in court, in relation to the attempted robbery of an Omagh filling station on 23 July.

Two of the accused are also charged with a string of offences connected to the incident, including assaults and criminal damage.

The court heard two staff members were subjected to "sustained attacks".

The teenager had only been released from custody for separate offences, a fortnight beforehand.

Ryan Lynch, 18, of no fixed abode, Niall Monteith, 20, and Boyd Holmes, 42, both from Deverney Park in Omagh are all charged with attempting to steal cigarettes and cash from the Texaco garage in Campsie.

Mr Lynch and Mr Monteith are also charged with assaulting staff at the premises and with criminal damage in the store. Both victims sustained significant injuries.

Mr Monteith is further charged with assaulting three police officers, damaging a police vehicle and three counts of attempting to damage the vehicle.

Mr Lynch is additionally charged with making a threat to kill.

A detective constable told Dungannon Court all three accused could be connected.

'Sustained and violent attack'

The court heard police viewed CCTV footage from the store after the incident and all three men were arrested shortly afterwards.

The detective said Mr Lynch and Mr Monteith entered the filling station and made straight for the till where they demanded cash and cigarettes.

They punched both male members of staff and threw items around causing damage.

Mr Holmes was seen to enter the premises and remained whilst the assaults were carried out.

All three then left the filling station but Mr Lynch and Mr Monteith returned and both launched into "a sustained and violent attack" on the two staff members.

Mr Holmes again came back in remained throughout the duration of the assaults.

All three then left in Mr Holmes' vehicle.

The detective was opposed to bail in relation to Mr Monteith and Mr Lynch stating both had substantial previous records.

Mr Lynch has multiple previous offences and had only been released from Hydebank Young Offender's Centre on 9 July and is on bail for charges of making threats to kill.

In relation to Mr Monteith, the court heard he has 28 previous convictions, many of which involve violence, as well as witness intimidation.

A solicitor acting for Mr Lynch informed the court she would not be making a bail application at this time, and declined to provide a reason when asked by the district judge.

Bail was not opposed in relation to Mr Holmes, whom a solicitor pointed out was disabled and has lost a leg.

In relation to Mr Monteith, Judge John Meehan remarked: "There is no question of granting bail. This was a bizarrely and highly violent incident which must have been horrendous for the victims."

All three accused are to appear at Omagh Magistrates Court on 21 August.

UPDATE, 10 August 2015: The Public Prosecution Service decided, in October 2012, not to prosecute Mr Holmes.

In October 2013, Ryan Lynch was convicted of two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm and one of criminal damage. Niall Monteith was convicted of three counts of assault on police and one of criminal damage.
