Up to 30 petrol bombs were thrown at police during a riot in north Belfast on Wednesday night.

Bottles, bricks and golf balls were also thrown by youths gathered at the junction of Woodvale Road and Ballygomartin Road.

Some of the bottles and golf balls struck a home for elderly people.

No residents of the home were injured, but the entrance was damaged during the attack.

Ch Insp Gavin Kirkpatrick said: "Around 23:30 BST a fire was lit and a traffic light was extensively damaged.

"Police were attacked with bottles, up to 30 petrol bombs, bricks and golf balls.

"Some of the bottles and golf balls struck a nearby residential home for elderly people."

A police spokesman said: "While no arrests took place at the scene, CCTV footage was taken for evidential purposes and police are working to try to identify anyone involved."

DUP councillor Brian Kingston said the trouble had been "causing great upset and anguish to residents".

"I have spoken to quite a few residents and they are just fed up with this and they do not want to see this trouble happening within their area," he added.

"They (the youths) were masked, they had petrol bombs, bottles and rubble and did damage to traffic lights.

"Bins were stolen from some residents and a Silverstream bus was attacked which was coming from the Ballysillan area."
