A 14-year-old girl is in a critical condition in hospital after a crash involving a bike and a car in County Down.

The collision happened at Aghnatrisk Road in Culcavy, Hillsborough, on Saturday at about 17:30 BST.

The teenager sustained head and leg injuries and was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital.

DUP MLA Brenda Hale said she has been lobbying to have traffic calming measures introduced along the road.

"It's a residential area, heavily populated, and cars are flying up and down that road. There's nothing to stop them," she said.

"This child was just doing what any child should be doing on a summer's evening, out playing on her bike."

Police have appealed for information.

Insp Jim McGrillen said: "We would like to hear from anyone who saw the incident involving the cycle and the Audi car, or saw them on the road beforehand.

"The incident occurred about a mile from the Culcavy Road/Harry's Road junction."
