Lib Dem conference: 'Britain would be poorer outside EU' - Farron

Britain would be worse off outside the European Union, Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron has warned.

Speaking ahead of speech on the subject at the Lib Dem conference in Bournemouth by his predecessor, Nick Clegg, Mr Farron said that the UK would be "much poorer, much less relevant, much less important in the world, much less safe", if it were to leave.

Mr Farron also said the result of May's election was "shattering" for the party but that 20,000 new members had joined since.
