Scottish children's favourite words revealed

Research into the most popular words used by children in Scotland have been unveiled.

Wee, jotter, janny, gran, jet backpack and pandas all made it into the top 10 while hashtag tops the list of most popular words UK-wide in a writing competition for 13-year-olds across the UK.

Scottish entries among the 120,000 submitted to the BBC Radio 2 short story competition were examined by lexicographers from Glasgow University.

Dr Susan Rennie, a lexicographer and expert in Scots language at the University of Glasgow, told BBC Radio Scotland's Hayley Millar: "These are Scots words, they're not occurring in the stories for children out with Scotland and very much reflect the child's world."
