The RAF has confirmed it was responsible for a flight which sparked speculation over a "mystery plane" criss-crossing Scotland on Tuesday.

Plane spotters noted the unusual flight path of the Bombardier Global Express aircraft on the Fligthradar24 website.

Some flight watchers had speculated it could have been an RAF "spy plane".

An RAF spokesman said the flight was a "routine" Sentinel mission - used for ground surveillance and mapping - adding "we fly, it's what we do".

The flight path took the 5 Squadron plane from Lincolnshire, up across the south of Scotland and out over Ayrshire, Arran, Islay and Jura several times before it left Scottish airspace.

Fine weather meant criss-crossing sky trails had been spotted across the country along with the online flight data.
