A 48-year-old man is in a serious condition in hospital after being stabbed during a fight in Renfrewshire.

Police said he was found lying injured in Canal Street, Renfrew, at 2020 BST on Wednesday after a disturbance involving two other men.

He is being treated for stab wounds at Glasgow's Southern General Hospital. The attack is being treated as attempted murder.

Police are checking CCTV footage and have appealed for witnesses.

Det Sgt Jim Connolly, of Strathclyde Police, said: "The investigation is at an early stage and we are working to establish a motive for this attack.

"Police are currently carrying out enquiries in the local area to glean more information and we are checking local CCTV to try and identify those involved.

"I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of Canal Street around 2020 hours last night who may have seen or heard a disturbance to come forward to police."
