Police are treating a serious assault on a man in a Glasgow suburb as attempted murder.

The attack happened at about 03:15 near Springcroft Gardens in Swinton in the east side of the city.

The 22-year-old was approached by six men as he walked into a lane near the housing estate after being dropped off by a taxi on Easterhouse Road.

The men engaged him in conversation before attacking him with a bladed weapon.

The man, who has not been named, managed to make his way into Springcroft Gardens where he raised the alarm.

Police and emergency services attended, and the man was taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary by ambulance.

Medical staff described his condition as serious but stable.

The suspects are described as wearing black clothing, and being aged between late teens and early 20s.

Detective Sergeant Kenny McCartney of Greater Glasgow CID said: "This was a disgusting, unprovoked attack on a young man who was simply making his way to a friend's house after a night out in Glasgow city centre."

He appealed to the driver of the black Hackney taxi who dropped him off to contact them.

The detective said they also wanted to speak to anyone who saw a group of men fitting the description of the suspects.
