British Transport Police have appealed for witnesses after a man was assaulted by four men on a late-night train.

The assault on the 31-year-old from Greenock took place at about 00:20 on the 23:50 Glasgow to Gourock service on Saturday.

The victim intervened when four men appeared to be annoying a woman about to get off the train.

He was punched and kicked, and had to receive treatment for facial injuries at Inverclyde Hospital.

His partner, a 29-year-old woman, was pushed during the incident.

The four men left the train at Bishopton. Two are described as being about 25 years old, while one was slim and wearing a t-shirt, black shorts and white trainers.

Another was described as tanned and wearing a black t-shirt.
