A man has been jailed for seven years for raping a woman in Glasgow.

Ibrahim Ahmadi attacked the 25-year-old at a flat in the city last March after they had been drinking.

At the High Court in Edinburgh, judge Nigel Morrison told Ahmadi that his victim had been "incapable of giving or withholding her consent".

The 23-year-old, who came to Scotland from Afghanistan at the age of 16, was placed on the sex offenders' register indefinitely.

Ahmadi, formerly of Glasgow, had denied the offence.

'Better life'

The judge said there was "no alternative" to a jail sentence.

Defence counsel Margaret Breslin told the court that Ahmadi was born and raised in Afghanistan but came to Scotland seeking "a better life".

She said her client had been "a useful member of society" and had managed to secure his own tenancy.

She added that both Ahmadi and the victim had consumed alcohol on the night of the attack.
