A nine-year-old boy is in a serious condition after being hit by a car in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire.

The boy was struck by a Porsche Cayenne, driven by a 42-year-old woman, while he crossing the town's Bank Street, at about 16:40 on Saturday.

He is being treated for a head injury at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

Police have appealed for witnesses and want to speak to anyone who saw the boy playing in or leaving nearby Blairhill Park just before the accident.

Insp Darren Faulds, of Police Scotland, said: "Inquiries are continuing into this incident and I would urge any witnesses to the crash, or anyone who saw the young boy running from the park and into Bank Street to come forward to police."
