A 49-year-old man who told an eight-year-old girl he loved her, sent her social media messages and kissed her, has been convicted of sexual assault.

Paul Dempster had denied the charge claiming he treated her like a family member, but he was convicted by a jury at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

The court heard how he sent her private messages calling her "babycakes", and repeatedly asked her to phone him.

Sentence was deferred until later this month and he was remanded in custody.

The incidents took place between February and May 2013 when Dempster was visiting the child's family at a house in the North of Glasgow.

The court watched a taped police interview from 2013 of the girl.

She said Dempster gave her hugs and kisses that were "sometimes on the cheek, sometimes on the lips".

The girl's dad said he saw Dempster kiss his daughter "four or five times" and that he told him to stop it.

Before going on trial Dempster also pled guilty to a string of charges including vandalising a car belonging to the girl's father on two occasions in May 2013 and twice failing to turn up at court in July 2014

He admitted that between May and July 2013 he damaged property, stalked a 20-year-old former colleague, drove without insurance or an MOT and breached bail.

Sheriff Platt said Dempster had been convicted of a "catalogue of serious and alarming" charges and put him on the sex offenders register.
