Fury Road, the latest outing in the Mad Max franchise, has opened in cinemas. The film's script was co-written by British comic book artist and writer Brendan McCarthy.

McCarthy has this week released examples of the artwork he created for the movie and a potential graphic novel inspired by Australian director George Miller's apocalyptic future portrayed in the original films.

The London-born artist began working on ideas for Mad Max 4 more than a decade ago.

McCarthy, who created the storyboards for the films Highlander 2: The Quickening and 1996's Nessie movie Loch Ness starring Ted Danson, approached Miller about resurrecting the Mad Max movies.

As well as co-writing the film, McCarthy produced thousands of drawings for its storyboard, the looks for the characters and monstrous machines.

The artist has described working with Miller as a dream come true.

The film that emerged from storyboard and script stars Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy.

McCarthy has upload his Mad Max Fury Road portfolio to the website http://artbrendan.com/portfolio-items/mad-max-fury-road/?portfolioID=115
