Work should start later this month to clear trees from the route of Inverness's planned new West Link road.

Almost 130 trees will be cut down along the A82, Bught Road and south of the River Ness.

Highland Council said some of the timber would be made available for community projects.

More than 3,170 trees will be planted as part of this initial phase of the local authority's £55m new road project.

The West Link has been put forward as a way of easing travel across Inverness but is opposed by a local campaign.

Opponents say the road would lead to the loss of green space.

The road project also involves relocating Torvean Golf Course and Highland Rugby Club's pitches and extending Kilvean Cemetery.

Building a £23m regional sports hub could also potentially form part of the scheme.
