The 999 emergency service has been restored in the far north of Scotland and Orkney, after being out of action for much of the day.

At about midnight, the Highlands and Islands division of Police Scotland reported problems with 999 calls from landlines in the John O'Groats, Hoy and Longhope areas.

Calls from mobile numbers were unaffected.

The service was reported to be back to normal at about 16:15.

Police Scotland posted on social media: "We can confirm that normal service has now resumed."
