Man jailed over Clackmannanshire knifepoint robberies

A thief who robbed a teenager at knifepoint before holding up a shop in Tullibody has been jailed for four and a half years.

Daniel Hutchison stole a phone and an MP3 player from 18-year-old Iain Cowper at midnight on 11 April, before donning a balaclava and targeting a shop the following evening.

The 23-year-old took £400 after threatening workers in Ahmed's Store.

He was jailed for four years and six months at the High Court in Edinburgh.

Mr Cowper was walking home to Stirling, having missed his bus, when he was targeted by Hutchison on Alloa Road, Tullibody.

Hutchison forced the student to go to a cash machine and withdraw £10, before taking his iPhone, iPod and £15 from his wallet.

'Great distress'

The following night, as Hutchison was carrying out the armed raid at Ahmed's Store on Stirling Road, a woman found the stolen phone and iPod at his brother's house.

She went through the contacts list and dialled a number listed under "mum", and Mr Cowper's mother explained that the phone had been stolen.

The items were taken to Alloa police station, where Mr Cowper identified them as those stolen from him.

Hutchison, a prisoner at Barlinnie, pleaded guilty to charges of armed robbery and assault.

After discovering the 23-year-old had 20 previous convictions, Lord McEwan told him: "It is clear that you are not of good character.

"These offences caused great distress to both the student and the members of staff in the shop.

"If you hadn't pleaded guilty the headline sentence would have been six years."
