A major fire at one of Europe's biggest science museums, the Cite des Sciences in Paris, has been brought under control after raging for six hours and threatening a large area.

A massive plume of black smoke could be seen over the area in northern Paris early on Thursday, as 120 firefighters spent six hours tackling the blaze.

The cause was unclear but fire alarms at the sprawling site had been switched off because of building work.

Two firefighters were slightly hurt.

Officials said around 10,000sq m at the Parc de la Villette site had been affected by fire or smoke.

A spokesman said several levels of one of the museum's four horizontal cube structures had caught fire and the blaze had spread to the roof.

Millions of people visit the museum every year. It features children's exhibits and an IMax theatre, and is widely used as a science learning centre for the public.
