The whaling commission conference is being held in Jersey

The organisers of a conference on whaling have said they are expecting a peaceful event in Jersey.

Protesters are expected to demonstrate outside the International Whaling Commission's annual conference at the Hotel de France in July.

About 450 delegates from 88 member countries are expected to attend, including those from the whaling nations, Japan, Norway and Iceland.

The Commission said it would be discussing conservation issues.

'Small demonstration'

Dr Simon Brockington, secretary of the IWC, said the number of demonstrations were fewer these days because of a shift in the way the Commission carries out its work.

He said: "The IWC always attracts a wide range of observers from other governmental organisations and civil society organisations as well.

"All delegates to the IWC have a point of view to make and it is possible some NGOs (non-governmental organisations) might wish to make a small demonstration.

"It is important to recognise there has been a degree of evolution in the Commission within recent years and it is more common now to find NGOs joining in the discussion."

Every year the IWC meets to discuss subjects including population numbers of whales, conservation issues and countries that break the rules on killing the marine mammals.
