Residents of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires have been trying to cool down during the worst heat wave in four decades.

Temperatures have reached almost 40C (104F), driving many to seek refreshment in the River Plate.

The city's antiquated power grid has not been able to cope with increased demand by residents running air conditioning units. There have been frequent power cuts, affecting both homes and businesses such as this ice-cream seller.

Some districts have been without electricity for 10 days or more, sparking protests by residents.

Some protesters have blockaded roads creating gridlock as many tried to leave Buenos Aires to celebrate New Year's Day somewhere cooler.

Military doctors have been setting up mobile stations to monitor the health of those most at risk from the heat.

Police and firefighters have been drafted in to help distribute water to those in need.

A thunderstorm brought some relief to Buenos Aires on Monday evening, with temperatures dropping slightly.
