Thousands gather to mark summer solstice

An estimated 37,000 people gathered to watch the sun rise at Stonehenge to mark the summer solstice.

The summer and winter solstices are celebrated each year to mark the longest and shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere.

Druids, a pagan religious group dating back to Celtic Britain, are among those who celebrate the days.

Solstice means a stopping or standing still of the Sun...

...and has had spiritual significance for thousands of years.

Stonehenge is believed to have been used as an important religious site 4,000 years ago.

Recent pagan celebrations at the stone circle began in the 20th century.
