Pooches compete for Ugliest Dog title

The World's Ugliest Dog contest is a competition like no other, where dogs with unusually large heads, hairless bodies and other oddities are celebrated for being different. Here Katherine Kobliner celebrates after her dog Yoda, a Xoloitzcuintle, is placed third in the pedigree category.

The contest is held in California, America each year and a number of them are rescue dogs who are now in loving homes. This is SweePee Rambo, a two-year-old Chihuahua Chinese Crested mix.

The competition is in its 26th year and gives the animal owners a chance to show off their pups. This is Josie, a Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix with a protruding tongue, being held by her proud owner.

The dogs are scored by a three-judge panel in several categories, including special or unusual attributes, personality and natural ugliness. Grovie the pug has been dressed in a tuxedo for the occasion.

The past five winners have included a duck-footed beagle, boxer and basset hound mix with a waddle and a Chihuahua with a missing eye and a camel's back. Here Monkey a Brussels Griffon is enjoying the VIP treatment as he walks down the red carpet and works the cameras.

And this year's winner? A 2-year-old pooch named Peanut, who is thought to be a Chihuahua-Shih Tzu mix. Peanut was abused by his previous owner but...

luckily is now getting lots of love and attention from his new owner Holly. Holly hopes Peanut's victory will help raise awareness about animal abuse. She plans to donate the $1,500 (£880) prize to pay for other animals' veterinary bills.
