Episode 4
Jools welcomes Skepta, Jordan Rakei, Bloc Party, Johnny & Lillie Flynn, corto.alto and Rita Wilson.
Jools welcomes north London rapper Skepta, who returns 11 years after his iconic debut performance on the show. Skepta performs a couple of tracks from his forthcoming album The Fork and Knife, including recent single Innocent Smile, which sees him join forces with Suggs from Madness in what is surely the collaboration of the year. Jools also chats to Skepta about the new album and the influence of his family, and they look back at his debut performance on the show of Shutdown in 2015.
From New Zealand, singer-songwriter and musician Jordan Rakei performs two songs from his forthcoming seventh album A Safe Place to Be Wild, described as 'an intimate, surreal and emotionally direct record about self-acceptance, vulnerability and creative freedom'.
From London, indie stalwarts Bloc Party return to the show with two performances from their recent Top 10 album Anatomy of a Brief Romance, a memoir in 14 songs which frontman Kele Okereke has described as some of the most personal songs he’s ever written.
From Hampshire and Pembrokeshire, sibling duo Johnny & Lillie Flynn, who are both actors and musicians, perform the song The Music of the Spheres, taken from their album Beam Cottage - inspired by the folk, acoustic and traditional music they grew up with and named after their childhood home - ‘an idyll of happiness and togetherness before life began to feel more complicated’.
Glasgow’s corto.alto, led by multi-instrumentalist producer, composer and performer Liam Shortall, perform a track from their highly anticipated new album SOME SMALL FORTUNE, which sees 'each track…artfully layered and strikingly different from the last, yet they all cohere in the joyous sound world of Shortall’s imagination'.
From Los Angeles, singer-songwriter and film producer Rita Wilson performs a song with Jools from her latest album Sound of a Woman, described as an 'impassioned suite of songs that follow the arc of a woman’s life, charting all the triumphs and missteps and unseen turning points leading to the radical awakening of full-fledged womanhood'. Jools and Rita also chat at the piano about the new album and how she recorded it in the same Nashville studio that Dolly Parton recorded Jolene and I Will Always Love You.
Also appearing in this series are Jamie T, Violet Grohl, Emily Bear, Antony Szmierek, Leo Sayer and Tia Gordon.
