At 18 years and 313 days old, Wilson Odobert became the youngest goalscorer for Burnley in the Premier League.
His goal left Clarets fans dreaming of a first win over Chelsea at Turf Moor for 40 years.
Yet instead of going on to seal the points, Burnley conceded an equaliser before half-time before Chelsea scored three times without reply in the second half.
The result leaves boss Vincent Kompany with plenty to ponder during the international break with his side struggling to adapt to life back in the Premier League after promotion.
Burnley have now lost seven successive home games at this level - all five this season together with two in May 2022 when they were relegated.
They return from the latest international break to face three successive away games - Brentford on 21 October followed by Bournemouth a week later.
Then it's a short trip to Everton in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup on 1 November.
Kompany will hope for a much better performance from his players in front of their own fans when they return to Turf Moor to face Crystal Palace on 4 November.
