Crystal Palace were well beaten by Tottenham Hotspur on Friday. The Eagles did well in the first half but were undone by an own goal from Joel Ward and a strike from Son Heung-Min.

Hodgson said he was happy with the first half but a lack of experienced players to bring off the bench made the team "weaker" as they chased a way back into the game.

"If the game had ended with us continuing as we had done in the first half and coming away with a result at the end of the game, even a draw, I would have been sitting here really really pleased with what I had seen," he said. "There was no disappointment today.

"Maybe, that the young substitutes who we like to think we believe in or that will help us to a different level, they didn't show that.

"They didn't do anything for us at all really, we became much weaker when I made the substitutions.

"Unfortunately, when the game is drifting away from you at 2-0 one is tempted to do that partly because we need to see these players.

"We need to see if they are going to be able to help us out, we certainly didn't get any help today. We got a lot of help from the first group players in the first half, I thought they were good."
