Former Premier League defender Stephen Warnock says Andre Onana is not an upgrade from David de Gea and has let his team down again.

Erik ten Hag's side twice held a two-goal lead against Galatasaray on Wednesday, but mistakes from their goalkeeper threw Galatasaray lifelines as the game finished 3-3.

The result leaves United bottom of Group A, with their Champions League destiny now out of their hands.

"Onana has let them down. I know players will say it’s a team game but he has to do better," Warnock told BBC Radio 5 Live after the game.

"He was brought in for big money, he’s a big-game player and he’s just not ignited his Manchester United career and they could rue those mistakes later on in this group.

"Not good enough. You look at the goalkeeper and he has to do better. For the third goal I don’t think he should be beaten at the near post. It’s a great strike, but your positioning has to be better and you have to anticipate that. It should be a wonder goal to beat you at the far post, not the near post.

"Onana has let his team down and I don’t like saying that too often about players. We all have off nights and we have off nights in our jobs and I did it in games as well. But you have to do better away from home and in a game of this magnitude.

"He was brought in to advance Manchester United and replace David de Gea. I don’t see it as an advancement in that area."
