The quartet 'integral to DNA of Emery's side'

The Premier League’s current most in-form side (over the last six-games) certainly has a settled team, with eight players starting every one of Aston Villa’s 10 league games this season, and Pau Torres starting nine, having come on as a substitute in the other match.

On top of that, Emi Martinez only missed one game due to injury.

In many ways, Unai Emery has been compelled to play his 10 regulars due to circumstances. The absence of injured players such as Tyrone Mings, Emi Buendia, Jacob Ramsey, and Alex Moreno has made it even more challenging to balance Villa’s league ambitions and their potential to win silverware in the Europa Conference League, beyond initial expectations.

The absence of this quartet has weakened Emery’s rotation potential, contributing to Villa’s initial struggles in their European performances. However, their impressive 4-1 win away against AZ Alkmaar, considered Villa’s main threat in the group, finally signalled their intent in the tournament.

A quartet of Villa’s longest-serving players - Douglas Luiz, John McGinn, Ezri Konsa, and Ollie Watkins - has been crucial in compensating for Villa’s depleted ranks.

All four players, prior to Emery’s arrival, had experienced periods of patchy form. However, after the Villa manager tapped into their undoubted upside last season, all four have gone up another gear to be integral to the DNA of Emery’s side.

In a world where new expensive signings are often seen as the only solution, Emery’s approach has certainly been more sustainable.

Ramsey and Moreno will hopefully return shortly after the November international break and if Villa can avoid any major injuries, there should be no reason why they will not still be in one of the top five potential Champions League places come the turn of the year.
