Moyes on Olympiakos, 'lucky charm' Europe and 'tough' atmosphere

  • Published

David Moyes has been speaking to the media before West Ham's Europa League game against Olympiakos on Thursday.

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

  • Moyes confirmed that Vladimir Coufal hasn't travelled after feeling tightness, but everyone else has including Ben Johnson and Aaron Cresswell, who are available to play if needed.

  • He feels it a "fantastic enthusiasm" from Greek football fans, but after recent crowd incidents, he added: "You want the passion but you always want good behaviour. It's a big game but it's important that everyone works together to make sure everyone has a good night."

  • On opponents Olympiakos, who he also faced when Manchester United manager, he said: "It's always tough coming to Athens and Olympiakos will be a tough game. They are always in Europe and they've got lots of experience. You have to embrace the challenge and enjoy it. As a football man, you want big atmospheres."

  • Asked if he thinks last year's Conference League triumph can help them with the Europa League, he said: "We've had two very good years in Europe but, at West Ham United, we've not had it regular. Olympiakos are a serial European side, but I hope European football is a bit of a lucky charm for me and this group."

  • He acknowledged it is "difficult" communicating in big atmospheres, adding: "You do your best, and sometimes that's passing the information to the nearest player, but it is tough."

  • On whether he has talked to their Greece international Konstantinos Mavropanos about the opponents, he said: "We've spoken with Dinos about Olympiakos and we know about their tough players. We know about Podence because of his time with Wolves."

  • He added: "We've done as much work as we can. We understand what we can. We have two games against them coming up now and I'm sure we'll get to know each other well over those games."
