'He has a lot to prove' - does Ten Hag need to 'broaden his horizons'?

Erik ten Hag has been getting "a free ride" for Manchester United's problems believes ESPN senior football writer Mark Ogden, who says the Dutchman should be getting more scrutiny for some of his decisions.

Scott McTominay's injury-time double saved United at home to Brentford on Saturday and, while there are a myriad of current difficulties at Old Trafford, Ogden told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast that Ten Hag is culpable.

"I understand the anger at the Glazers, but some of the problems may also have been instigated by Ten Hag," said Ogden. "It is not the case that he is the victim.

"For instance, he pushed and pushed to sign Antony last summer when the United scouts and hierarchy were not sure - and he has not been very good.

"Even last season they were trying to persuade him there is a bigger market out there than just people who have played in the Netherlands. Even Mason Mount played for Vitesse Arnhem.

"I think he needs to broaden his horizons rather than just sign players he is familiar with. Going forward, I think Ten Hag has a lot to prove."

Football analyst Statman Dave was more forgiving of Ten Hag, suggesting "a lack of unity" at United was hindering their efforts to progress.

"Take Arsenal - Edu and Mikel Arteta working together make it one of the best-run clubs," he said. "United do not have that. If they are just falling back on players Ten Hag has coached then that is a massive issue.

"If they recruit the right players, he is one of the best coaches in world football. But if it is not working for him, it will not work for anyone under the current ownership."
