Second-half goals from Ollie Banks and Marc Richards sent Chesterfield top of League Two after dominating Exeter.
After forcing seven corners in the first half, the Spireites took the lead on 48 minutes when Banks's header went over the line before being cleared.
Richards headed straight at Exeter keeper Artur Krysiak before scoring his sixth of the season from a flowing counter attack 20 minutes from time.
Exeter offered very little all night, mustering only one shot on target.
Chesterfield move two points clear at the top of the table, having played one game more than Oxford United, ahead of the weekend's fixtures with Exeter staying in 11th.
