Kieran Agard scored his seventh goal of the season for Bristol City
Kieran Agard's smart finish ended Oldham's 13-game unbeaten run and moved Bristol City five points clear at the top of League One.
The Robins took the lead when a well-worked free-kick routine involving Wade Elliott and Aaron Wilbraham found Agard, who shot into the bottom corner.
Agard's effort from distance, with Paul Rachubka stranded, nearly made it 2-0.
Frank Fielding saved substitute Dominic Poleon's shot as the hosts weathered late pressure to win.
Victory extends Bristol City's unbeaten league run to 22 games, while Oldham's first defeat since August sees them drop to ninth.
Bristol City manager Steve Cotterill told BBC Radio Bristol:
Cotterill on Bristol City v Oldham
"It was a hard-fought game. I think that if you look at the first 25 minutes we were fantastic - we started at a blistering pace.
"I think that Oldham had the better of it for 10 minutes in the first half right at the death, but by then we could have been four up.
"Going in at half-time, I sensed a little bit of disappointment from the lads because we've normally come out of the traps and all those chances have gone in.
"But today was going to be about patience and concentration and it was going to be small margins that won that game."
Oldham manager Lee Johnson told BBC Radio Manchester:
"I'm obviously disappointed to lose the unbeaten run, but more importantly lose the game.
Lee Johnson: Oldham manager on Bristol City defeat
"I thought the lads were fantastic against a very good Bristol City side.
"I'm certainly not blaming the referee, all I'm saying is you like a consistency in the decision making.
"We just came up short but there's a lot to be positive about."
