Forfar ended a run of five matches without a win thanks to goals from Stephen Smith and Omar Kader.
The hosts took the lead after just four minutes when Smith's drive found the top corner and they dominated the remainder of the first half.
Ten minutes after the restart Kader tapped home from six yards and Chris Templeman's header hit the crossbar.
Ayr United went close to a consolation goal in the final minute but Dale Keenan headed against the post.
