Winger Gary Roberts won and scored a late penalty to ensure Portsmouth won away against Plymouth Argyle.

Roberts was brought down by Gary Sawyer and then got up to convert the visitors' second penalty of the game.

Matt Tubbs gave Pompey a first-half lead, firing home down the middle after Hiram Boateng felled Enda Stevens.

Roberts made it 2-0 with four minutes remaining and Portsmouth held on for a third win in three games this season despite Gregg Wylde's late reply.

Portsmouth assistant manager Leam Richardson told BBC Radio Solent:

Richardson on Plymouth v Portsmouth

"Firstly the result is pleasing, the work rate and endeavour from the boys from the first minute. Coming away to Plymouth to get a positive result is really pleasing for us.

"Throughout the season we have various ideas to keep the lads fresh because the timetable is tough. This month we are playing Saturday and Tuesday with the Cup games as well; it's important if we can give them that extra rest and leg work.

"The club have been excellent; Mark Catlin and the staff have been outstanding letting us come down on Thursday evening and preparing for the game and from that we have got the reward."
