Northampton Town manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has called for "more encouragement" from the club's fans as his side were booed off after their 0-0 League One draw with bottom side Bury.

The Cobblers ended a three-game run of defeats but have not scored in four.

"It's not fair on the boys - they're giving everything and they've actually played well," Hasselbaink said.

"I think it is not nice, especially after this kind of performance, that we are walking off with boos."

Northampton are 22nd and no side in the third tier has scored fewer goals this season.

Former Chelsea and Netherlands striker Hasselbaink has been in charge since replacing Justin Edinburgh as boss in September.

"Sometimes we need a little bit more encouragement off our fans," he added to BBC Radio Northampton.

"It frustrates me a little bit. I'm a supporter of football and when I go to football I don't go to boo people.

"You have Matt Crooks - who had pain in his knee - but insisted on playing because he wanted to help the boys.

"Fans don't know that but he played an absolutely magnificent match. He's so gutted that he misses a chance and then he has to walk off with boos."
