A weakened Blackburn Rovers side scored twice in stoppage time to come from 2-1 down to beat League Two Oldham Athletic 3-2 and make the Carabao Cup second round.

Rovers, who made 11 changes from the side that lost at Fulham, looked as though they would lose a third game from three since the start of the season after Oldham's Curacao winger Gevaro Nepomuceno shot in low from 20 yards.

Bradley Dack levelled early in the second half, but Mohammed Maouche's brilliantly curled effort from the edge of the box seemed to have ensured an upset for the Latics.

But Rovers levelled in the 92nd minute as former England winger Stewart Downing got his first for the club since his summer move from Middlesbrough before Dack laid on a tap-in for Joe Rothwell in the 95th minute.

The Championship side created plenty of chances during the second half and could have levelled at 1-1 earlier as Ben Brereton hit the post after good work from Dack.

Then, at 2-1 down, Oldham keeper Gary Woods saved well from Dack when 12 yards out late on before the goalscorer dragged an excellent chance wide a minute later.

However, Downing struck to spare Rovers' blushes before Rothwell sent Tony Mowbray's side through to face Premier League newcomers Sheffield United in the second round.
