Hull City were made to pay for missing a first-half penalty as a Derrick Williams header saw Blackburn Rovers to victory in an absorbing Championship contest.

Williams gave Rovers the lead just after the hour mark, flicking home a floated Stewart Downing free-kick in a result which gave the visitors a third straight league win over the Tigers.

It came after Jarrod Bowen's penalty was terrifically saved by Christian Walton, during a frantic opening 45 minutes in which the woodwork was struck five times.

But Grant McCann's men failed to take their chances throughout the match, meaning Williams' goal saw Rovers home.

After a quiet opening 12 minutes, the hosts were given the perfect opportunity to take the lead when Bradley Johnson fouled Jackson Irvine inside the area.

Bowen's penalty was fiercely struck, but Walton dived well to his left to punch the ball away, keeping the game goalless.

Both Daniel Batty and Kamil Grosicki came close for Hull during an entertaining first half, in which Blackburn hit the bar twice and the post once through Johnson and Downing.

Williams also produced a decisive defensive contribution in the final minute of added time, making a superb defensive clearance as Hull pressured Rovers for an equaliser that never came.

Hull City manager Grant McCann told BBC Radio Humberside:

"I thought the performance was OK, but we didn't test their keeper enough. We got into good areas and caused them problems, but didn't find that killer instinct. We were sloppy around their penalty area, but we will have to get back to the drawing board.

"With the attacking players we have at this football club, we should not be coming in with one or two shots on target.

"The penalty miss would have put us in a better place, but there was still a long way to go in the game.

"We were very disappointed to lose a goal to a set play - we work very hard on the training ground on that."

Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Christian Walton told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"Not many teams come to Ewood Park and have that many chances, so credit to us for coming here and breaking the lines and playing well in attack.

"We had a disappointing start, so to get two wins back-to-back against two established Championship teams is good for our confidence.

"Jarrod Bowen's got a good penalty record, I watched his videos today, and I like to think I'm a student of the game and study people's weaknesses.

"The back four were really solid tonight, and we're all singing off the same hymn sheet defensively."
