England win World Cup opener in tough Haiti test

England were given a stern test by Women's World Cup debutants Haiti in their opening group match but came through with a narrow victory in Brisbane.

Georgia Stanway's penalty was enough to give England victory in an underwhelming performance.

The spot kick had to be taken again after the Video Assistant Referee adjudged Haiti goalkeeper Kerly Theus stepped off her line early to save the midfielder's first attempt.

Much like their display in the opening match against Austria in Euro 2022, which England went on to win, Sarina Wiegman's side looked short of creativity and sharpness.
