Ulster conceded nine tries as they fell to a 55-15 defeat in Friday's pre-season friendly away to Northampton.

Winger Ben Foden and prop Kieran Brookes scored first-half tries with full-back Charles Piutau replying for Ulster who trailed 12-5 at the break.

Tom Collins, Alex Mitchell and Michael Paterson each scored two tries and James Grayson got the other as the Saints added seven touchdowns.

David Shanahan's solo effort was Ulster's only try in the second half.

Both teams made a string of changes to give players match time before the start of their domestic campaigns.

Ulster kick-off their competitive season at home Pro14 newcomers the Cheetahs on 1 September.

One of the Ulster's replacements saw the return of South African forward Marcell Coetzee.

The 26-year-old managed just four matches last season after suffering a recurrence of a knee injury.

Coetzee's fellow Springbok Jean Deysel started the match at number eight while John Cooney made his debut at scrum-half following his move from Connacht.
