The Transat Jacque Varbe was Phil Sharp's fifth Class 40 race of the season
Jersey sailor Phil Sharp finished third in the Transat Jacque Vabre race between France and Brazil.
Sharp and crewmate Pablo Santurde led Class 40 of the race between Le Havre and Salvador for 12 of the 17 days.
But their Imerys Clean Energy boat ended up five hours and 14 minutes behind the eventual winners.
"I'm not going to hide the fact that watching our lead wither away over the last few days has been difficult to swallow," Sharp said.
"Though it's not exactly the result we had hoped for, or had worked towards during this race, I am satisfied to say that we really did give it our all.
"We pushed the boat and ourselves to 100% over the whole race and made the most of opportunities that came our way."
The race was won by Maxime Sorel and Antoine Carpenter in 17 days 10 hours and 44 minutes.
