Paralympic swimming champion Jessica-Jane Applegate has qualified for an able-bodied event for the first time.

The 18-year-old won the women's 200m freestyle S14 at London 2012 in a Paralympic record time and received an MBE in 2013 for services to swimming.

And the Great Yarmouth-born swimmer has now qualified for the British Summer Championships' 400m individual medley.

"This shows Jessica-Jane's dedication to improving all aspects of her swimming," said coach Alex Pinniger.

What is the S14 classification?

"Swimmers with intellectual impairment who also meet the sport-specific criteria compete in sport class 14."

"Looking forward, things are going well towards Rio 2016."

Applegate added to BBC Radio Norfolk: "I cannot wait for the able-bodied Nationals. The last few years I have been there swimming the Para events whilst my Caister team-mate Jack Utting swims as able bodied.

"We have been through such a lot together and it's not always good results, so it's great to have him supporting me again this year and we do have fun too."
