  1. Newcastle results 'a bit shocking at the moment' - Jaisslepublished at 09:14 GMT

Matthias Jaissle applauds the fansImage source, Getty Images

Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle says his side "lack the clinical approach" to currently get positive results.

The Magpies limped to a 3-1 defeat at Everton on Thursday to exit the Carabao Cup.

It means it is now three defeats in four for Jaissle and his team, who failed to build momentum after Sunday's 2-0 win at Crystal Palace.

"We, of course, are disappointed with the result. It's also a bit shocking at the moment because overall the game was not that bad," Jaissle said.

"But it's a bit the story of the season so far. In situations where it really counts, we lack the clinical approach to solve the situations."

Two first-half goals essentially took the game away from Newcastle. Everton's opener stemmed from Amar Dedic's poor clearance, while their second came from a counter-attack after Harvery Barnes was denied a penalty.

"Just thinking about the first one again, it's no-risk zone," added Jaissle. "We [should] clear the ball and nothing happens, and a couple of seconds later we concede a goal out of nothing.

"The second one is also frustrating. We deserved to have a penalty, but on the other hand, we then miss in a transition to defend our own box, which again is difficult to accept.

"We need to learn quickly. It's about being mature in the situations, more clinical to solve the situations and not allowing almost a gift for the opposition to score.

"It feels like the opposition is not giving us these gifts at the moment, so we need to avoid that."

  2. 'We have a chance to make it right on Monday' - Burnpublished at 08:29 GMT

Dan Burn in action for Newcastle against EvertonImage source, Getty Images

Newcastle defender and goalscorer Dan Burn reflecting on the Carabao Cup defeat at Everton: "That was our best chance to win silverware. Very, very disappointed. I thought we played pretty well in large parts of it.

"Everton didn't do too much to score goals - they came from our mistakes and we were not ruthless enough.

"In the second half, when you are on top and dominating, to then concede a goal from a simple pass is frustrating. If we did tonight the things we did against Crystal Palace, it would have been a different game. We know we have a chance to make it right on Monday.

"It's not for lack of effort from the lads - it's the moments when you have to be clinical, attacking and defending. We're not doing either of them well enough, away from home especially.

"I can understand frustrations completely. We know it was a huge opportunity for us."

  5. Keegan set to be awarded Freedom of Newcastlepublished at 10:57 GMT 28 October

Kevin Keegan is to become the first person to be posthumously awarded the Freedom of Newcastle.

The former Newcastle United player and manager will be put forward for the Freedom of the City next week, following his death earlier this year aged 75.

Newcastle City Council have said it would "serve as a lasting tribute to a man who meant so much to the city".

The local authority confirmed he was due to be awarded earlier this year, but it was not formally agreed before he died in July, weeks after he revealed his cancer diagnosis.

Councillors will be asked to approve the award at a special council meeting on 4 November.

Liberal Democrat leader Colin Ferguson said: "You could see from the enormous amount of tributes left outside St James' Park what he meant to the city and the footballing world."

Flowers, cards, shirts and scarves were left outside the city's stadium in the days following his death.

"The proposal to posthumously bestow the Honorary Freedom of Newcastle on Kevin is a fitting tribute to everything he gave to our city," Ferguson said.

As a player, Keegan scored 48 goals in 78 games after joining Newcastle in 1982 and helped secure promotion back to the First Division.

He then returned to Tyneside as manager in 1992 and led the club into the Premier League, where his famous 'Entertainers' team came close to winning the title.

Keegan went on to manage Fulham, Manchester City and England, before returning for a second spell in charge at St James' Park in 2008.

He will join other Newcastle sporting legends such as Alan Shearer, Sir Bobby Robson, Jackie Milburn, and Eddie Howe in receiving the Freedom of the City.

The award is an honorary status that involves a recipient's name being inscribed in the wall of the Banqueting Hall at the Civic Centre.

In a statement, his family said: "Kevin always shared his love for Newcastle United, Geordies and the city, captivating us with stories told with his infectious smile."

They said the tributes allowed them a "quiet moment to reflect on many fond memories of Kevin's incredible career and the incomparable bond he shared with Newcastle".

Newcastle United CEO David Hopkinson said he would "always be, quite simply, one of the most important, influential and beloved figures in the history of Newcastle United".

"The proposal to make Kevin an Honorary Freeman of Newcastle, the highest civic honour, is a fitting recognition for one of the city's greatest icons."

    • Anthony Elanga and Jacob Ramsey are making "progress day by day", but Jaissle refused to answer when they would return to a starting spot in the XI.

    • Jaissle will look to find a "balance" rotating the squad, but expects "stabilisation" with players coming into the team.

  9. Crystal Palace 0-2 Newcastle - the fans' verdictpublished at 11:33 GMT 26 October

    Your opinions graphic
    Media caption,

We asked for your thoughts after Sunday's Premier League game between Crystal Palace and Newcastle.

Here are some of your comments:

    Crystal Palace fans

Ken: I would like to say that Palace competed well against a very good Newcastle team, but the truth is we struggled to create anything near decent football against a pretty standard side. Embarrassing really.

Rob: The same old problems, our defence just can't manage to concentrate for a full 90 mins and we open up for opponents to score. So frustrating as we were the better team in the first half. Then after the restart our defence goes to sleep.

Keith: The team are definitely getting better after all the changes and outgoing transfers. I saw a lot of good things in the match and I am sure things will improve soon.

Lee: Poor second half, we can't defend for toffee and have no leaders. Adam Wharton isn't a captain, and players like Tyrick Mitchell, Daichi Kamada and Chris Richards are a shadow of themselves and look bereft of confidence. I can't see Pierre Sage lasting unfortunately. He's been hung out to dry by lack of investment and ambition from Steve Parish and the board, and inept player recruitment from Matt Hobbs. Both have to go if Sage does.

    Newcastle fans

Samuel: A much needed win. It goes without saying that Palace have been pretty poor this season. The first half lacked a lot of quality from our side, however, the team seemed to come out with a bit more fighting spirit in the second. It's always good to see Will Osula score, the lad has a lot of potential and without a doubt needs more game time from Matthias Jaissle.

Dean: Very much a game of two halves. I was not anticipating a win at any point in the first half as we struggled to gain any control on the game. Thankfully, neither did Palace. Second half we came out more aggressive, and got a hold of the game, creating several good chances. Dan Burn, Fabian Schar and Joelinton gave us that aggressive edge we've been missing, while Osula (even when not involved as much as he should be) is a threat going forward. A step in the right direction (I hope).

Richard: Well, the first half was truly awful but let's put it down to the swirling wind, shall we? Second half was basically 10 minutes of utterly turbocharged Toon blowing Palace away, and after that Palace very much looked like a team who'd played mid-week in Europe.

Simon: The first half was fairly poor with too few chances created and mistakes passing and keeping the ball. A much improved second half where we controlled the game, were defensively strong and created chances. Great assist from Jacob Murphy and it was unfortunate that Joe Willock's goal was just offside. A good performance which will give confidence, which hopefully will show in upcoming games.

  10. Palace win 'a confidence boost' but 'still a lot of work to be done' - Andersonpublished at 09:24 GMT 26 October

    Media caption,

Former Newcastle defender John Anderson says beating Crystal Palace 2-0 "is a confidence boost" following recent results, but it is too early to say the Magpies "have turned a corner".

"Huge three points," said Anderson on BBC Radio Newcastle. "But it wasn't a classic by any means.

"The first half was very, very forgettable and the two goals at the start of the second half was enough.

"The first goal totally did Palace. You could see it, heads dropping, they just threw the towel in.

"It was an important win because questions were starting to be asked about the manager. It's a big win, it's a confidence boost, and the fact we kept a clean sheet is an added bonus.

"I think it's important to say that we weren't great. We weren't fluent, but it is something to work on.

"You can't come here and win and then all of a sudden say we have turned a corner. There's still a lot of work to be done."

  11. Crystal Palace 0-2 Newcastle: What Jaissle saidpublished at 08:47 GMT 26 October

Matthias Jaissle reacts to Newcastle's 2-0 win against Crystal Palace: "I think we played a good game, especially in the first half.

"We were much more aggressive in duels, we won a lot of first and second balls.

"Maybe there were some cheap mistakes, bad passing, bad receiving, but you see how fast they are – in five seconds they were in our box.

"We should have scored one or maybe two more with better decisions.

"In the second half, at around 60 minutes, we lost a little bit of control and they were better, but this is Brentford and they take more risks.

"I can regret the chance we had through Mohamed-Ali Cho and (Joe) Gelhardt, maybe it should have been 2-1, but in the end I think it's a fair result."

On the result being a step in the right direction: "Togetherness was never a question. During the week we had really good commitment, a really good feeling.

"They're believing, they trust me, they're definitely a unit, but wins and victories are helping, so we're happy that we got the three points.

"We need to identify ourselves as a unit, as a team who also overcome setbacks, and that's what we did today.

"You need the team-mates, you need the staff, you need the coaches, the fans, and if we have that mindset, that we are a unit all together, then we will be successful."

This was a timely win for Matthias Jaissle, who was starting to feel the heat himself after three defeats in the previous four Premier League games.

The German made five changes to the side that lost 1-0 at home to Aston Villa last weekend and, after an uneventful first half, his team sprang into action after the interval.

Dan Burn, who has been injured, marked his first Premier League start of the season with a solid performance, while the confidence returned to the team after William Osula's goal.

Newcastle started the weekend in 11th spot but this win lifted them to seventh before the late match between Sunderland and Leeds.

They have back-to-back games against Everton next - away on Thursday in the Carabao Cup before hosting David Moyes' side in the Premier League on 2 November.

The question is, will they use this result as a springboard to kick on?

  15. Sutton's predictions: Crystal Palace v Newcastlepublished at 11:13 GMT 25 October

Chris Sutton smiling on a yellow and black background with 'Sutton's predictions' written below his face

Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage's future appears to be in some doubt but his critics seem to have forgotten that they are 14th in the table, when the Eagles finished 15th last season under Oliver Glasner.

Yes, Palace had a heavy defeat at Brighton last week and it doesn't help it was at the hands of their big rivals, but it is not like Sage has got one point from his first seven games. They are leaking a few goals, but there are reasons for that.

There has been huge change at Selhurst Park in recent months, with some key players leaving, especially at the back. Others have stayed but are still unhappy, and Sage has had a lot to contend with.

Palace played in Turkey on Thursday night, which won't have helped their preparation for this game, but I still feel like they will get something against Newcastle.

There has been a lot of change at the Magpies too, but the thing that worries me most about Matthias Jaissle's side is that they are so open.

"Chaotic" was the word I used to describe them against Aston Villa last week.

Villa are always very well structured in the way they play but they got chances against Newcastle just by persevering with their build-up play.

If Newcastle don't get their press quite right again here, then Palace will cause them problems too - I definitely don't see this game as being one where defences are on top.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-2

  16. Crystal Palace v Newcastle: Key stats and talking pointspublished at 13:33 BST 24 October

    Matthew Hobbs
    BBC Sport journalist

Crystal Palace and Newcastle United face off at Selhurst Park on Sunday in a battle between two teams who concede too many goals.

BBC Sport examines some of the key themes going into their meeting in south London.

The comprehensive nature of Crystal Palace's 5-0 loss at Brighton last weekend was such that manager Pierre Sage subsequently said he felt shamed by the performance when issuing a post-match apology to supporters.

Palace are not the first team to fall to Brighton's impressively fluid football this season, but conceding five goals on the south coast underlines a worrying early-season trend for the Eagles.

They have let in the most goals of any side so far, while 17 goals conceded after seven matches is their highest tally at this stage of a Premier League campaign.

Sage's side have shipped at least two goals in 11 of their past 13 league outings and have faced the most shots (125) and most shots on target (43) of any top-flight team this season.

Palace also have the highest expected goals total against (14.8) in 2026-27, evidencing the quality of chances opposition sides have been able to create.

A table of data from Opta highlighting Crystal Palace's defensive metrics in the 2026-27 Premier League season, all of which they rank 20th

The key question for Sage is how best to address defensive deficiencies. He opted to award 18-year-old centre-back Honest Ahanor, on loan from Atalanta, a second Premier League start at Amex Stadium, but he was substituted after 53 minutes.

Axel Disasi replaced Ahanor for the Europa League fixture at Besiktas on Thursday night and while Palace's overall performance was much improved, they still conceded two goals and could not find a winner against 10 men.

First-choice goalkeeper Dean Henderson could feature for the first time since the 3-2 win at Fulham on 5 September after returning to training on Monday, but collective improvement will surely be needed if Palace are to follow up the 3-1 victory over Nottingham Forest with another home victory.

Newcastle United have defensive issues of their own to address, having conceded four goals in each of their past two away matches during defeats at Leeds United and Coventry City. The Magpies have not done so in three successive away matches in 97 years.

Newcastle have lost three of their past four league matches, including a 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa at St James' Park last weekend when they also laboured in front of goal, recording 16 attempts but only one shot on target.

Yoane Wissa had seven shots without hitting the target against Unai Emery's side in another frustrating individual performance.

The DR Congo international has scored one goal from 18 shots so far this season, at a conversion rate of just 5.56%. Of all Premier League players to have found the net at least once, only two have a lower shot conversion rate than Wissa.

A table of data showing the goalscorers with the worst shot conversion rate in the 2026-27 Premier League season
    Image caption,

Yoane Wissa has struggled in front of goal since joining Newcastle from Brentford

And Newcastle also have to contend with a poor record at Selhurst Park. They have won only one of their past 11 league matches at Palace (D6, L4), a 2-0 victory under Steve Bruce six years ago.
