We're a bit jealous of the Hairy Bikers. Especially since their latest series - starting next Monday on BBC Two - involves exploring the nation's pubs.

In the second programme Barrow lad Dave Myers takes Si King on a tour of the Lake District during which they try a wine-like drink called negus and try to find the "Biggest Liar".

They also visit popular climbers' watering hole The Wasdale Inn.

David Cameron said: "We've made hardship payments amounting to over £7m but we do need to make sure that the lessons of how to make the system work better in future years are properly learnt."

  12. Natural anti-flood scheme 'a success'published at 13:22 BST 13 April 2016

A natural flood management scheme saved a North Yorkshire town from floods at Christmas, a report has concluded.

The idea of reducing flow higher up to stem problems further down has been suggested by some as a way of protecting against further floods in Cumbria too.

The Environment Agency's scheme in Pickering slowed river peak flow by 15-20%, saving Pickering's museum and several homes, it said.

More than 2ins (5cm) of rain fell in the area over 36 hours from 26 December.

However, the EA warned the scheme that saved it last winter would not work in extreme rainfall.

Now there's a headline you don't get every day.

The Telegraph newspaper is reporting that hundreds of homes in Cumbria will be heated using cheese, external.

It says the Lake District Creamery in Aspatria will receive millions of pounds in subsidies for turning whey and other residues from the cheese production process into "biogas".

Some will be used to generate electricity on-site and the rest will feed into the local gas grid.

  16. Leader of the Green Party is coming to Barrow to argue the case for nuclear disarmamentpublished at 11:35 BST 13 April 2016

    BBC Radio Cumbria

The leader of the Green Party, Natalie Bennett, says the Barrow shipyard shouldn't rely on getting an order for the next generation of nuclear deterrent submarines and make wind turbines instead.

More than 8,000 jobs depend on the order to build new boats that would carry the nuclear weapons. A decision is expected later this year but design work is already underway at the shipyard.

The local Labour MP, John Woodcock, says Natalie Bennett's suggestion would lead to major job losses.

But, speaking to BBC Radio Cumbria this morning, Natalie Bennett said the wind energy industry would create more jobs in the end.

She will speak at an open meeting in Barrow this evening.
